Airbus A340-600

Airbus A340-600 is a variant of Airbus A340. Airbus A340-600 was made in April 2001. Virgin Atlantic began operations with Airbus A340-600 in August 2002. Airbus A340 is a commercial passenger flight manufactured by Airbus S.A.S. The aircraft having four engines was launched in the year 1987. This long-range aircraft is designed to complement the short range A320 Airbus and the medium-range A300 Airbus. The design of A340 has much common features with A330 which has two engines. Both A330 and A340 have similar wing and fuselage structure. But A340 has the ability to fly long over-water routes.

Rolls Royce Trent 700, Pratt& Whitney PW4000 or General Electric CF6-80E engines empower the A330-200 aircraft. It was first delivered in 1998 in the Airbus A340-600 was designed in order to compete with Boeing 747 and has a capacity of 380 passengers in a three-class cabin layout. The Airbus offers a similar capacity to a 747 with 25% more cargo volume and at lower seat costs. AirAirbusA340-600 is 10 m longer than A300. The first Airbus A340-600HGW version took off in November 2005 and received certification in April 2006. The Airbus has a Maximum Take off Weight of 380 tons and a range of 7900nm. This became possible due to the strengthened structure, increased fuel, more powerful engines, and new manufacturing techniques like laser beam welding.

Emirates were the first customer to launch Airbus A340-600 HGW after it ordered 18 such aircrafts at the 2003 Paris Air Show. But still now the airline has not taken the delivery of such order. Qatar Airways, A rival of Emirates placed an order at the same show and took the delivery in September 2006.In April 2007, the Airbus had advised carriers to reduce cargo in the forward section by five tons as the additional weight induces the center of gravity of the aircraft to be moved forward thereby reducing the efficiency of the aircraft.
