Bhutan

Located in the southern part of India, Bhutan is a small but beautiful country and is popular all over the world as a tourist destination. Bhutan or the Kingdom of Bhutan is actually a landlocked country which is located to the North of India. Apart from India, Bhutan or the Kingdom of Bhutan shares its geographical borders with China and Nepal. Bhutan is located on a wonderful valley at the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains and offers breathtaking scenic beauty to people. The scenic beauty of Bhutan is the most important reason behind its popularity as a tourist destination. Thousands of tourists, not only from all other parts of Asia but even from other continents visit Bhutan to enjoy their holiday in its wonderful natural surroundings. Apart from the valleys, the mountainous terrains, river banks and wilderness areas that are scattered all over Bhutan are also very popular as tourist destinations and remain thickly crowded with international tourists almost in every season. The wilderness areas of Duars, the glaciated mountain peaks, the Black Mountains and rivers like Raidak, Torsha, Sankosh and Manas are also very popular as tourist spots in Bhutan. Apart from that the historical and archaeological sites that speak about the spread of Buddhism in the region in ancient times are also an integral part of tourism in Bhutan and attract lot of tourists.

The history of Bhutan is quite interesting. Located right in between India and China, Bhutan or the Kingdom of Bhutan is known to its people as Druk Yul, which means the land of thunder dragons. In its past, Bhutan was also known in names like Lho Mon, which means Southern land of darkness, Lohmen Khazhi (Southern land of four approaches) and Lho Tsedenjong (Southern land of the Tsenden cypress. Though the origin of the name 'Bhutan' is still unknown, historians believe that the name might have originated from Sanskrit words Bhota-ant which means the end of Bhot.

Bhot is a Sanskrit synonym of Tibet. However, the country came to be known as Bhutan from late 19th century.

Bhutan or the Kingdom of Bhutan is an isolated and one of the most developed nations in the world. The economy of Bhutan is quite weak and is dependent mainly on its agricultural products and jewelries. The existing good trade relations with the neighboring states enables Bhutan to earn some revenue by exporting electricity, timber, handicrafts, cement, fruits, spices and precious stones. Tourism is also one of the leading contributors to its weak economy.
