Japan Airlines

The Japan Airlines Corporation or JAL, is an airline of Japan. It is the largest airline operator in Asia. It is based in Tokyo, Japan, operating scheduled and non-scheduled international and domestic services. Its main bases are Tokyo International Airport and Narita International Airport, Tokyo. It has 17,925 employees as on March 2007. Two companies operated under the Japan Airlines brand are Japan Airlines International and Japan Airlines Domestic. Japan Airlines Domestic had primary responsibility for JAL's large network of intra-Japan flights, while Japan Airlines International operated both international and trunk domestic flights. On October 1, 2006, Japan Airlines International and Japan Airlines Domestic merged into a single brand, Japan Airlines International. The Japan Airlines has the largest fleet of Boeing 747s in the world approximately 64, as of April 2007.JAL flying to Mexico City and Sao Paulo is one of only three Asian airlines to fly to Latin America. The others are Malaysia Airlines and Air China. It also schedules major types of flights boarding from Japan.

The Japan Airlines was established in August 1951, with the government of Japan recognizing the need for a reliable air transportation system to help Japan grow in the aftermath of World War II. On October 25, using three Northwest Airlines Martin 2-0-2 aircraft, and Northwest crews, Japan Airlines began serving several domestic cities from Tokyo.

The Japan Airlines is the fourth-largest air carrier in the world, with 56,8 million passengers. It is Japan's largest airline company. The Group's principal activities are scheduled and non-scheduled air transport services, aircraft maintenance services and control and administration of business activities of affiliated companies relating to air transport and aircraft maintenance as the holding company. The Group is also involved in financial service including card and leasing and hotel and resort business. The operations are carried out through the following divisions Air transportation, Travel planning and sales, Air transportation related business,Card and leasing business and Others. In 2001,Japan Airlines was ranked fourth behind the three leading US domestic airlines in terms of total turnover. The company dominated the outgoing market in Japan, with a share of 70% in terms of volume that is passengers carried, which is more than three times greater than the next largest airline, All Nippon Airways Co (ANA). As for the domestic airlines sector, the company had a 27% share, which is about half the size of that of ANA, the largest company in the domestic sector.

The Japan Airlines brings the world to Japan and takes Japan to the world. Its primary operating unit, Japan Airlines International, serves more than 170 cities in some 35 countries. It operates a fleet of about 275 aircraft, consisting mainly of Boeing jets. Besides its scheduled passenger services, Japan Airlines carries air cargo, provides maintenance and ground-support services for airlines, and owns the international chain of Nikko hotels.
