Air Nuigini Pty Limited |
Air Nuigini Pty Limited is the National Airline of Papua New Guinea which was established in 1973. Thanks to Air Nuigini, today one can see the spectacular Highland regions, experience the mighty Sepik River and partake of the rich history and culture of the coastal villages.
The modern aircraft fleet consists of a Boeing B767 for international routes and Fokker F-100, F-28 jets and Dash 8 aircraft which are ideal aircrafts for the Papua New Guinean terrain. There is also a daily flight of the Fokker F100 to Cairns in Australia.
The days leading to the formation of the airline were not easy. In the end, a historical agreement in the Australian Parliament decided that a single national airline would be formed to take over Papua New Guinea's country services and it would compete on Australia-Port Moresby route too.
"Air Niugini" was proposed as the airline's new name. Niugini is the standard New Guinea's Pidgin English. In the initial days, the Papua New Guinean government had a 60 % stake with Qantas and Trans Australian Airways (TAA) taking 12 % stake each and the remaining 16 % being Ansett's share. Thus was born Air Niugini, the airline.
In the first year, Air Nuigini Pty Limited carried 350,000 passengers, more than Trans Australian Airways and Ansett combined. The targets were left far behind.
Air Niugini's fleet size in 1975 went up to ten aircrafts.

There was no road linking capital Port Moresby to other country towns and due to grave shipping contraints, Air Nuigini played a vital role in the economy and opening up inaccessible areas.
Apart from linking new country destinations, there were flights to Brisbane, Manila, Hong Kong and Kagoshima in Japan. These were followed by Honolulu, Jakarta and Singapore and later on Auckland. Agreements were also executed with Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific and a management support agreement with KLM
In 1983, the New Guinea Islands region got an an all jet service from Air Nuigini Pty Limited, which was now the leading state owned corporation in the country.
Air Niugini also unveiled a new computer system for new passenger reservations, ticketing systems and departure control known as Gabriel. The system, a modern one in use with airlines worldwide also offered information on some 10, 000 hotels worldwide and up-to-date regulations on some 200 countries and regions worldwide.
After more than 32 years of dedicated operations, Air Nuigini promotes the country worldwide through posters and brochures and also offers holiday packages of 3 to 21 days in exotic Papua New Guinea locales.
