The airlines flies to forty four major destinations It services eighteen domestic destinations in the Philippines and twenty six destinations in Australia, Canada, United States, East Asia and Southeast Asia.

The Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 badly affected PAL. The airline was forced to downsize its major international operations by completely cutting off flights to Europe and later evenSouthwest Asia. It also stopped all domestic services save for those routes that operated from Manila. It cut down on the fleet size and the jobs of of many thousands of employees were terminated.

In 1998, the airline was placed under receivership, gradually and painfully got its act together and exited receivership in 2007. Philippine Airlines was the first Philippine airline to be accredited with the IOSA (IATA Operations Safety Audit) by the International Air Transport Association. It also fetched a three star rating from Skytrax.
