SriLankan Airways Ltd

The SriLankan Airways Ltd was formerly known as Air Lanka. In 1998 the airlines entered into a 10 year strategic partnership with Emirates which has a stake of 43.6% in the company. The government retained majority of the stake in the airlines but gave full control to emirates for investment and management decisions. Thus from 1998 onwards Air Lanka came to be known as SriLankan Airways Ltd.

The month of April 1998 heralded a new era in the history of Sri Lankan civil aviation when its flag carrier, Air Lanka, was privatized following the establishment of a strategic partnership with Dubai based Emirates Airline. The agreement, in which the United Arab Emirates airline took a 40% shareholding in the company, was the regenerative boost that was urgently needed to re-establish Air Lanka as southern Asia's preferred international carrier. This was crucial as throughout the previous decade investment had been minimal, a factor that had retarded growth and taken away the airline's competitive edge.

As part of its commitment to the Sri Lankan government Emirates contracted to undertake the management of Air Lanka for a 10-year period, during which time it would establish programmes to stimulate renewed growth and profitability. Primary among these considerations was the development of Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo, as a major passenger and cargo hub linking east and west. The SriLankan Airways Ltd now boasts an all Airbus fleet, one of the most modern fleets in the region. It is the first in all of Asia to fly the Airbus A340 and the first in South Asia to order the Airbus A330-200.

The SriLankan Airways Ltd is the proud recipient of a number of awards in the airline industry. It has been honored to be recognized in such a wide range of categories and it aims to continuously improve its service and dedication to provide comfort for its valued customers. The awards hail from a number of prestigious aviation research agencies and travel magazines across the globe. SriLankan Airways "Dial-a-Ticket" service is now a popular and hassle-free method for people in remote areas to arrange their air travel. The airline is carrying out a series of 'road shows' in the Central, Southern, and Uva Provinces(Uva is Sri Lanka's second least populated province) to create greater awareness of the convenience of the service and also the knowledge of different types of flights.

SriLankan Cares, the community development arm of SriLankan Airways Ltd is committed to the empowerment of the child through education, good health and a sustainable environment. The airline identifies the child to be the focus and future of the nation, as such has given priority to projects that will enhance choices available to children in Sri Lanka, especially in education and good health. SriLankan Cares is not only about the responsibility towards Sri Lanka, but it is also about being uniquely SriLankan to the world. It is what this airlines does with passion and care, for the progress and well being of every child in Sri Lanka.
