Hemus Air |
One of the popular airliners in the region, Hemus Air is a Sofia based aviation company of Bulgaria. The major operational base of Hemus Air is at Sofia International Airport while it also has a hub at Varna Airport in Bulgaria. It started off its operations in the year 1986 after separating from Balkan Bulgarian Airlines. While initially the operations were restricted to provision of air ambulance services, aerial photography and flight calibration, it gradually expanded its operations and made its way into air services and charter flights.
Hemus Air had a number of destinations to cover till a few years back. However, restructuring and modernization of operations have resulted in Hemus Air reducing its operations considerably. The fleet size too has become smaller and currently stands at 12. The existing fleet of Hemus Air includes 5 BAe 146-300, 3 BAe 146-200, 2 Boeing 737s and 2 ATRs.
Currently, Hemus Air has limited international operations. In fact, Tripoli in Libya is the only foreign destination covered by Hemus Air. The commercial arrangements with Balkan Bulgarian Airlines have resulted in it limiting the presence to domestic cities in Bulgaria only. In spite of being a small airline, Hemus Air continues to do well on the domestic aviation circuit in Bulgaria.
Bulgaria has opened up its economy to a certain extent in recent times. Consequently, the business opportunities have grown and so are the numbers for business visitors to the country.

Bulgaria also has many of the popular travel and tourist destinations of the region. Hemus Air is working on plans to ensure a greater number of air travelers using its services.
Hemus Air is also in talks with the local and international airliners on code sharing. Commercial partnerships to enhance the use of airport facilities are also underway. With Bulgarian airports witnessing a renovation and modernization drive to attract a greater number of travelers from all parts of Europe, Hemus Air is pinning its hopes on future expansion. However, a lot will depend upon the ownership and management issues that are being under consideration in Bulgaria.
The civil aviation scene is Bulgaria is firming up. And that has provided small and feeder airliners like the Hemus Air to capitalize and expand their operations. Though internationally it has no plans to grow but within the national frontiers of Bulgaria, Hemus Air has ambitious strategies to cover all the important cities. And subsequently become a more important aviation major in this part of the world.
