Maersk Air |
The growing numbers of frequent air travelers are inducing various airlines companies to implement new methods. Global aviation industry has gone through a number of significant changes in the recent times. Apart from providing excellent service to the air travelers the airline companies also pay heed towards minimizing the cost of air fares. Several airline companies starting off their low frill flights have successfully allured umpteen potential fliers. Maersk Air is one of the most reputed names in the field of low cost airlines that operated in Europe. Maersk Air was actually based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Maersk Air started its operations in the year 1969. It was then owned by the famous A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. In the year 2005 a substantial change occurred in the company when it was bought by Fons Eignarhaldsfelag, that is a famous investment group from Iceland. It was again in the year 2005 that the airline company went into merger with Denmark based Sterling European Airlines. After the merger the name of the airline company was changed from Maersk Air to Sterling Airlines. Soon after the formation of the new airline company it was again sold to FL Group, an Iceland based investment group.
| FL Group not only owns Sterling Airlines but also holds 16.8 % of share in easyJet. Maersk Air was established when A.P. Moller - Maersk Group acquired Falck Air in the year 1969. Falck Air was at that time involved in the operation of scheduled commercial flight between the Danish cities of Copenhagen and Odense. During that period Maersk Air bought three Fokker F-27 aircrafts and began charter operations. Afterwards in the year 1971, Maersk Air started operating its commercial flights to Vagar that is located in the Faroe Islands.

In order to enhance the domestic flight operations within Denmark, Maersk Air decided to collaborate with Cimber Air as well as Scandinavian Airline System and thus DANAIR was formed. DANAIR acted as an umbrella company that coordinated the domestic flights of these airline companies in Denmark. During the beginning of 1980s Maersk Air operated its international flights to Stavanger (Norway). It was during this time only that the airline carrier also stated operating its international flights to Southend-on-Sea located in the UK. Maersk Air also ventured with Lufthansa to form a cargo center in Copenhagen. Before it merged with Sterling European Airlines, the fleet of this airline company comprised thirteen Boeing 737-700 and five Boeing 737-500.
