Air Baltic

Air Baltic is the national airline of Latvia having its base in Riga, the primary base of Air Baltic being the Riga International Airport. It is also the biggest airline at its second major base in Vilnius. Founded on the 28th of August in 1995 with the starting of a business between the Latvian state and the Scandinavian Airlines System, Air Baltic began operating on the 1st of October in 1995. Its services started with the coming of a Saab 340, the first aircraft of Air Baltic at Riga and with the operation of this plane as the first Air Baltic passenger flight. This airline company was transformed into a 'joint stock company' in 1999 and with this change, Fokker 50s replaced all the former Saab 340s. Air Baltic started its operation under the special European Aviation Operating Standards by September 1999. It greeted the next year or the next millennium with the introduction of new uniforms and establishment of a cargo center at the Riga International Airport. Its fleet included the Boeing 737-500 in 2003 and it started operating its flights on the 1st of June in 2004 from Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania first to five destinations.

In 2006 December the Boeing 737-300 was introduced to the fleet of Air Baltic and in 2007 June, it started check-in system on the internet, the first of its kind in the Baltic states. Fokker 100 was incorporated in its fleet in 2008 January, which was taken on lease from Air Express Sweden. In 2008 spring the Air Baltic fleet is supposed to include two Boeing 757-200ERs. Air Baltic has got solid connections with SAS Scandinavian, the owner of 47.2% of Air Baltic. It offers its services to the hubs of SAS in Stockholm and Copenhagen.

It also takes pride in its strong connections with SAS and its frequent flyer programme is part of the EuroBonus scheme of SAS. Air Baltic is not one of the members of the Star Alliance or any other group of airlines. But at present it has got code share agreements with Blue1 and Spanair, along with an agreement partnership with Rossiya, Atlasjet, Aeroflot, Estonian Air, Uzbekistan Airways, Georgian Airways and Aerosvit Airlines.
