Air Malta

Air Malta is the national carrier of Malta that has its base in Luqa. Air Malta operates its flights to more than 50 destinations across the North African and European continents. The Malta International Airport is the base and primary hub of Air Malta. The people of Malta were habituated in using the sea for traveling overseas or in availing the flights operated by foreign airlines. But when Malta got independence the recently formed government thought of launching a national airline and thus Air Malta was founded on the 21st of March in 1973 in accordance with a declaration of the famous Malta House of Representatives. Air Malta was organized as a limited liability business and was gifted a certificate of rights for operating international flights from Malta.

On the 1st of April in 1974 Air Malta started operating its flights with two Boeing 720Bs that were obtained on wet lease. This fleet of Air Malta at first served the destinations of Rome, London, Frankfurt, Manchester, Paris and Tripoli from Malta. Three Boeing 737s were introduced in the fleet of Air Malta in 1983 and in 1986 it ordered for two 737s and ordered Airbus A320 in 1989. Two 720s from its fleet was vended and ordered for another 320 in 1989 and two 737s in 1992. Four Avro RJ 70s were also by Air Malta in 1992 for serving the routes between Malta and, Palermo and Catania, and also to new routes between Malta and, Monastir and Tunis. After the establishment of the Malta International Airport in the year 1992 it designed the 'CargoSystems' that feature cargo air transportation on its planes.

Air Malta opened a cargo center in 1994 at the Malta International Airport. An announcement was made by Air Malta in 2002 July about the attainment of its new fleet from Airbus. Air Malta was declared to be the airline that misplaced the minimum number of passenger luggage by the 2006 May's quarterly review of the Association of European Airlines.
