TAROM

Founded in the year 1920 under the name CFRNA, a French-Romanian Company for Air Navigation, TAROM previously used the French-built Potez aircraft for switching in between the destinations all over the world for flying the passengers. No only was it used as a passenger flights but it was also used for other purposes like providing mail services between Paris and Bucharest via several cities in Central Europe. It was in the year 1925, that the city of Galati became the first destination of its kind in Romania, which was served by regular flights at that point in time. In the initial years, TAROM had many names and also had also got many other names that kept changing from time to time. In the year, 1926 the airline changed its name to CIDNA. The International Air Navigation Company. It also adopted the name of LARES, Liniile Aeriene Romāne Exploatate de Stat in the year 1937, which got merged later on with its competitor SARTA, Societatea Romāna de Transporturi Aeriene.

After the end of the First World War and the extension of the Russian dominance in he several parts of Europe, the airline TARS got established in the year 1945 with joint collaboration of the Romanian and the Soviet governments. The domestic operation started here sometime later. In the year 1954, the airline adopted the name of TAROM, Transporturi Aeriene Romāne, which meant Romanian air transport. TAROM flew for a long time in the second half of the 20th century flying to a dozen cities across Europe. On May 14, 1974, it launched a regular service to New York City, and provided its service to the JFK International Airport.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, TAROM was able to acquire more Western-built jets. Introduction of the much awaited long haul flights to Montreal and Bangkok using the Ilyushin Il-62, and Airbus A310 aircraft also changed the flight perspective of many all over the world.
