Turkish Airlines |
Headquartered in Istanbul, the Turkish Airlines is one of the major airliners in Turkey. It is basically the national airline of Turkey, offering scheduled passenger services to 32 domestic cities and 107 international ones. Turkish Airlines operates across the continents of Asia, the United States of America, Europe and Africa. The operational wings of Turkish Airlines are under the aegis of the government.
The chief administrative and operational hub of the Turkish Airlines is housed at the Atatürk International Airport (IST) in Istanbul. A couple of subsidiary hubs are built at Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SAW) in Istanbul and at Esenboga International Airport (ESB) in Ankara. These secondary hubs are responsible for handling both domestic as well as international traffics to and from Turkey. As per official reports, the Turkish Airlines in 2006 alone carried more than 17 million passengers with a total earning of US$ 3 billion. All the 12000 employees are trained enough to meet the passenger requirements adequately.
| Tracing the history of Turkish Airlines is a fascinating task indeed. You need to date back to the 1930s to trace the inception of this premier Eurasian Airliner. On May 20 in 1933, Turkish Airlines was founded as State Airlines Administration known as Devlet Hava Yollari Isletmesi Idaresi (DHY). It took merely 3 months for the concerned authorities to start operations in a full-fledged manner. Turkish Airlines began operations in joint collaboration with Eskisehir, based in Ankara in August 1933.

It was fortified with three De Havilland D.H. biplane aircrafts four years later in September 1937. With the inclusion of these airliners, the infrastructure was beefed up enormously, making sure that Turkish Airlines could now carry more number of passengers for domestic transportation.
The number of passengers also increased by leaps and bounds in the next few years, making Turkish Airlines one of the most popular national airliners in Turkey. The domestic routes covered by Turkish Airlines included destinations such as Istanbul, Izmir, Adana, Ankara, Diyarbakir, Kayseri and Eskisehir. 1947 is known to be an important year in the history of aviation in Turkey as this year witnessed the introduction of the first international long-haul flight to Athens, Greece.
In 1956, Turkish Airlines underwent a major refurbishment, as the state-owned organization DHY got replaced by Türk Hava Yollari AO (THY). At present, Turkish Airlines is all set to tie business knots with the Star Alliance aviation organization in 2008.
