Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines is one of the low cost airline company of the United States of America. The company is based in Dallas, Texas. This airline company is the largest airline company of the country in terms of number of passengers carried per year. This is based on domestic passenger carriage. Southwest Airlines on the other hand is the second largest airline of the world in terms of total passenger carried. In terms of fleet, this airline company is the fourth largest commercial airlines of the world.

Southwest Airlines covers 64 destinations. The destinations covered are California, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Ohio, New Mexico, North California, Pennsylvania, Washington, Virgina, Tennessee and many more. The focus cities are Los Angeles International Airport of Los Angeles, Oakland International Airport of Oakland, San Diego International Airport of San Diego, Orlando International Airport of Orlando, Sky Harbor International Airport of Phoenix, Chicago Midway International Airport of Chicago, Dallas Love Field of Dallas, William P. Hobby Airport of Houston etc. On August 26, 2007, it resumed services from San Francisco in California.
Currently the Southwest Airlines operates only in the United States of America. It avoids the principal airport of the main cities of the USA. It mainly operates in the secondary airports to avoid congestion and landing problems. It operates more than 3,300 flights per day in 32 states in 634 cities.  

Fleet of Southwest Airlines:

As of January 15, 2008, the Southwest Airlines has in total 518 aircrafts. It include 25 Boeing 737-500, 303 Boeing 737-700 and 190 Boeing 737-300. the company has also ordered 106 Boeing 737-700. Boeing 737-700 covers all routes, Boeing 737-500 covers short hauls and Boeing 737-500 covers short-medium haul. The average age of the aircrafts of Southwest Airlines is 9.8 years.

Southwest Airlines covers prominent destinations at low cost. So it is one of the most popular airline company of the United States of America. Most of the passengers of the airline are the domestic passengers and the rest are the connecting flight passengers.

The airline company is planning to begin international flights from the year 2009. destinations will include Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. This company has set a business model for low cost airline companies. Other airline companies which follow the business model of Southwest Airlines are Malaysia's AirAsia, New Zealand's Freedom Air, Thailand's Nok Air and Qantas's Jetstar.
