Ansett

In the year 1936, Australia's Ansett Airways was registered and formed by Sir Reginald Ansett. Ansett or Ansett Australia was a major international and domestic airline of Australia, flying passengers throughout the continent of Australia and Asian destinations during the year 1996. In 2001, the Ansett Airways failed because of some financial problems. Majority of the assets of this Australian airway have since been liquidated. After its first take off from Hamilton Airport in Western Victoria, Ansett operated for continuous 66 years and 11 days. Ansett started its operations on February 17, 1936, by purchasing a Fokker Universal monoplane by paying a sum 1000 pounds. The inaugural take off happened from Hamilton to Melbourne with a full complement of 6 passengers along with the General Manager Mr. Reginald Ansett, together with the pilot Captain Vern Cerche. From then onwards commenced the success story of the Australian Ansett Airways.

The service of Ansett Airways touched the lives of several Australians for more than 60 years, including both loyal and staff members, many of the staff spent a major part of their working life in serving the company. During the year 1942 when the situation of Australia worsened by the World War II and Darwin was attacked by the Japanese, all the scheduled services of Ansett airways were suspended, only excepting the Hamilton-Melbourne carrier service. The management authority of Ansett devoted all its resources in meeting the financial needs of the American military personnel. This act allowed Australian National Airways (ANA), the prime rival of Ansett, to follow Ansett's most profitable routes lying between Adelaide and Sydney, in addition with the pick of other profitable routes. This decision led the air some chagrin at the end of the WWII. ANA refused Ansett in giving back the routes that had been taken during the war. This made Ansett take some time in convincing the Australian Department of Civil Aviation for allowing the airline to recommence its operations in those routes that were before the 1942 war period.

Ansett probably became Australia's first discount, no frills airline. On August 23, 1957, Ansett took over ANA. By the end of 1959, Ansett gained control over Guinea Airways, previously a pioneer of airline services in the Papua-New Guinea highlands. Ansett followed a new color scheme and new aircraft purchases; it continued its operations throughout 1980s and 1990s.
