Polynesian Ltd |
Polynesian Ltd or the Polynesian Blue is an airline of the Virgin Group that operates its flights between Australia, New Zealand and Samoa. The government of Samoa is the owner of 49% share of Polynesian Blue, its services being offered to replace the Polynesian Airlines that stopped its international flights on jets in 2005 and changed into an airline that started operating its flights within the islands of Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga and Fiji.
Virgins Blue entered into a contract with the government of Samoa for operating an airline company known as Polynesian Ltd or Polynesian Blue. This was announced many months after several discussions held between the Samoan government and Virgin Blue and led to the union of forces by these two parties for establishing a new business to start operating jet routes that were earlier served by the Polynesian Airlines. Virgin Blue is the second largest airline company of Australia that was established by the Virgin Group and is mostly managed by Toll Holdings. Virgin Blue operated its first low fare flight with only with two planes, a single route 200 staff team on the 31st of August in 2000. It offered its flights at half the rates of airfares demanded by other airlines. The name Polynesian Blue was given to it as it was one of the brands of Virgin Blue. The brands of Virgin Blue also comprised Pacific Blue that was based in Christchurch. The first flight was operated by Polynesian Blue on the 31st of October in 2005 between Auckland, Sydney and Apia. Only eight months after its formation Polynesian Blue made an announcement of a pre-tax earnings of 1.19 million New Zealand dollars. The government of Samoa is owner of 49% share of Polynesian Blue and Virgin Blue is the owner of another 49%. The owner of Aggie Grey's Resort and Hotel is the owner of the outstanding 2% of Polynesian Blue. The ICAO code of Pacific Blue was changed by it from PBI to PBN for stopping the controllers of air traffic for getting confused the I for a 1 in the plan of the flights. This is also applicable for the Pacific Blue operated Polynesian Blue flights.
