Air Vanuatu

Air Vanuatu has its base at Port Vila in Vanuatu and is renowned as the flag carrier of Vanuatu. Port Vila, the capital city of this Pacific archipelago is located on the south coast of Efate island of Shefa Province. It operates its flights to New Zealand, Australia and some destinations in South Pacific.

The primary base of Air Vanuatu is the Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila whereas its most important hubs are at Santo-Pekoa International Airport and Brisbane Airport. The Bauerfield International Airport is situated ed in Port Vila. Though comparatively small, this airport has long runways. The airlines that serve Bauerfield International Airport other than Air Vanuatu comprise Aircalin, Air New Zealand, Air Pacific and Vanuatu Helicopters. The Brisbane Airport is positioned in the suburbs of Brisbane and controlled by the Brisbane Airport Corporation Limited (BAC), its present CEO being Koen Rooijimans. It has domestic, international and cargo terminals. The Brisbane is served by Air Vanuatu as well as Aircalin, Air Pacific, China Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Japan Airlines and many others. Santo-Pekoa International Airport is located in Luganville at Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. The flights are operated to this airport under the administration of Airports Vanuatu Limited. Santo-Pekoa International Airport is served by Air Vanuatu and also Solomon Airlines.

Air Vanuatu was founded initially as New Hebrides Airways but its name was changed to Air Vanuatu in 1981after Vanuatu got its independence in 1980 from the United Kingdom and France. Government of Vanuatu is the sole owner of Air Vanuatu since the month of December in 1987. Vanair, another airline that operated in Vanuatu, was obtained by it in 2004 September 2004. It used to cover around 29 domestic cities on eighteen of the total eighty-three islands of this archipelago. The fleet of Air Vanuatu includes one ATR 42-300, one Boeing 737-300, one Boeing 737-800 and two Britten-Norman BN2A Islanders. Once, the Boeing 727s and two De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters were also used by Air Vanuatu. It celebrated two decades of its services for Vanuatu in 2007 December.
