Airports in St. Helena

Saint Helena being one of the remote islands as well a s a British Overseas territory that is situated in the southern parts of the Atlantic ocean has but a few modes of transportation. Named after the St. Helena of Constantinople the island is a volcanic island and also has some dependencies. There are but a few Airports in St. Helena and the island is one of the remotest place and cannot be reached by any ways other than the boat. There are however a few military Airports in St. Helena but the use of such Airports in St. Helena are strictly restricted among the British Military forces who are in charge there.

The Island of Saint Helena is well known in the history for one reason. The island was the place where the famous French Military as well as political leader Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled from the year 1815 till his death in the year 1821. The place where the famous French leader lived and the place where he was buried after his death was given to the French Government in the year 1858. Such a place where the remains of a world Famous Political leader are kept is likely to draw a huge tourists.

But since the place is an British Overseas Territory and the place is undertaken by the French Government Saint Helena has never quite grown as a tourist spot. As there are no well known civil Airports in St. Helena it is somewhat difficult for the common tourists to visit the place. However the efforts are being made to establish some Airports in St. Helena . The high authorities have also talked over the matter and the discussions are also being made regarding the Airports in St. Helena.

The Airports in St. Helena include a large airfield that is situated at the Ascension Island. The airfield provides weekly flights to some military bases to England. In these flights some civilian tourists might also visit the island of Saint Helena. In the year 2005 in the month of March it was announced by the British Government that they are going to build Airports in St. Helena. But these Airports in St. Helena are expected to be made ready for use, in another five years. So by the year 2010 there will be some civilian Airports in St. Helena. But the present situation is such that it might take another two years to build the proposed Airports in St. Helena.
