Macau is one of the popular tourist destinations of Asia which attracts a large number of tourists every year. Since flying is considered to be the safest and most convenient way to travel, this territory of South China has been able to develop its air transportation facilities. Macau International Airport is known to be the only airport in Macau. It is located at the eastern end of Taipa Island, which started its commercial operations in November 1995. Like the popular airports of the World, this airport is transporting a large number of people every year. Since there are not a large number of airports in Macau, all the traffic pressure is handled by Macau International Airport. With a paved Runaway of 3,360, it has become quite an important hub for the international travelers.

Besides being the major travel hub for passengers traveling to their destinations in China and Southeast Asia, this airport in Macau holds the reputation for handling 220,000 tons of cargo every year. If we look back just more than a decade ago we will be able to know that Macau was earlier gifted with only 2 temporary airports for small flights and several permanent heliports. Some of the advantages which the airport boasts of include its capacity to receive 6,000,000 passengers per year and processing capacity of up to 2,000 passengers per hour. It is only in the last year (2006) that the airport handled 5 million passengers.

Some of the popular airlines which serve Macau International Airport include Thai AirAsia, Air China, Cebu Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, Jetstar Asia Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, etc. as there are no other Macau Airports; the visitors have to depend on this airport. As it does not have a night curfew, it is of immense convenience for the travelers. There are 24 parking spaces for aircraft in the apron, with 4 jet ways which make sit more useful. The airport also has the potential of handling Boeing 747s.
