The airport was mainly for VIP use and thus was rarely used.

The Erbil International Airport is one of the other airports in Iraq and is operated by the Kurdistan Regional Government. The airport is located in Ankawa. It is one of the few Iraq airports which has facilities for both the passengers and cargo and operates daily flights. There is only one terminal for departures and arrivals and a new terminal is under construction. The airport makes use of the instrument landing system. It happens to be one of the two international airports in the Iraqi Kurdistan.

The Sulaimaniyah International Airport which is also one of the airports in Iraq is a military air base and is operated by the United States Army. This airport which serves Mosul was constructed in the 1920's by Great Britain. It became avail to the civilians from 1992 when the new terminal was constructed. The other military air bases are
Al Asad Airbase, Al Taqaddum and Ali Air Base.
